V5, Finance and Salvage Categories: Making a Repairable Car Saleable

Profit is only real when the car is legal, accurately described and easy for the buyer to own. Salvage traders need clear records for category status, V5, finance checks, VAT treatment and disclosure before the advert goes live.

Trader model

Ready to list = category clear + V5 status known + finance checked + faults disclosed

Paperwork is a saleability control. A cheap car with unclear V5, category or finance status can trap cash.

Understand the salvage categories

Cat N means non-structural repairable damage. Cat S means structural repairable damage. Cat B vehicles are for parts and cannot return to the road, while Cat A vehicles are scrap only. These labels affect repair planning, insurance, buyer confidence and final resale value.

The category should be recorded clearly in your vehicle file and reflected in the advert. Do not let category disclosure become a last-minute sales conversation.

V5 status affects timing and confidence

A vehicle with a present V5 is simpler to process than one where you need to apply for a replacement logbook. If the listing says V5 is missing, allow for admin delay and buyer questions.

On collection, check whether the expected V5, V5C/2 or relevant paperwork is actually present. Record the status immediately so the car is not advertised before the paperwork position is understood.

Finance checks protect the deal

Outstanding finance can create a serious problem, especially on higher-value vehicles. Traders should use appropriate history and finance checks before committing meaningful money, then keep evidence with the vehicle record.

If an issue appears later, keep written correspondence and avoid selling until the position is clear.

VAT margin scheme awareness

Many used vehicle traders use the VAT margin scheme where conditions are met, which means VAT is calculated on the margin rather than the full sale price. Auctioneers may also operate specific margin schemes.

This guide is not tax advice, but the operating point is simple: purchase price, sale price, margin, invoice details and VAT treatment should be recorded consistently and reviewed with your accountant.

Make compliance visible in the workflow

A vehicle should not be treated as ready to list until category, V5, known faults, finance check status and repair notes are clear. A simple red, amber and green compliance view can prevent awkward sales conversations later.

Motorpad keeps those items attached to the vehicle so advert copy, handover documents and analytics all start from the same record.
